The energy and enthusiasm of the young people taking part needs to be seen to believed. Unique in concept and exceptional in its implementation, the event combines the buzz of team bonding, together with the thrill of the individual winning. Each member of every team taking part contributes to the team points awarded. Not only that, but also, members of the Scout and Girl Guiding movements have plenty of FUN together. In the evening other events take over, providing music, games, and many inflatables, plus a leaders bar for adults to relax in. At the end it doesn’t matter who won or lost it only means, ”We did it together and had loads of laughs”. Like the person who, taking part in the endurance race, steered the car into a holly bush, reversed out, and carried on, only to come last. During the driving skills reversing section, one young lad was heard to say; “Now I know how my mum feels”.

Eight different sections make up the ‘Olympics’: - track, sprint, hill climb, relay, driving skills, pursuit, pedaloes, and endurance. The leaders fancy dress pursuit event was won by Sarah Baker in a very impressive show of strength and determination.

Prizes or £150, £100 and £50 are awarded to the winners of the junior and senior sections. This year first prize in the junior section went to Corringham Pegasus Scouts. Senior section first prize went to Pheonix @ Co. ESU
County Commissioner for Essex, Rob Lyon presented the prizes, together with Dino representative Mark Searle, who awarded the ‘Cute’ cup to the Rayne Guides ‘Unknown’ team. (They didn’t stop singing!) The Bocart challenge cup, for the fastest Scout track event, went to 1st Warley’s James Southgate (Won’t his mum be pleased!).

Lastly – as numbers are capped there are minimal queues this means everyone can take part in all the events and activities when and where they want.

Thriftwood also combines the ‘Olympics’ with The Artificial Ice - Speed Climbing Championship, which this year was won Scout by Jamie Walters, from 1st Doddinghurst, who minced the 13 metres of foam in a time of 1 min.19 sec’s.
DVD of the event is available for £5.

If you are interested in taking part in the 2008, book online, places are capped at 84 teams, so book now to avoid disappointment.
