Information on Ice Climbing on artificial ice at Thriftwood

Ice Climbing

Thriftwood opens first artificial Ice Climbing Wall

The surface is constructed from a very dense closed cell polyxxxxalene foam, 50mm thick. Being 9 metres high, the wall has three sections, first at a gentle angle for beginners, the second vertical, and the third can be hinged to create four degrees of overhang. That should test out the monkeys.

Boots from size 3 to 13 have special crampon points to help purchase. The Ice axes have also been modified to assist in removing the point from the 'ice'. The foam lasts about 12 months before replacement, there are four climbs and the foam can be turned over to give a fresh surface.

Here are a few pictures of climbers in action.
